This fluffy and smooth maple mascarpone frosting takes only minutes to make and tastes fantastic on chocolate cakes and cupcakes. It's not too sweet and easily made by whipping together mascarpone, cream, sugar, maple flavoring and vanilla extract. It holds its shape nicely and freezes well.

Recipe ingredients and notes:
Note that I don't recommend substituting maple syrup for maple flavoring in this recipe. The maple flavor of maple syrup is not intense enough to sufficiently flavor the frosting.

What is the consistency of mascarpone frosting?
Mascarpone frosting is stiffer than whipped cream but still fluffy and not as firm and rigid as buttercream.
How to use the frosting:
This maple mascarpone frosting is fantastic on chocolate cake and chocolate cupcakes.
A perfect chocolate cake to use this frosting on is this chocolate Bourbon cake, made as a layer cake. (The recipe makes two 9-inch layers.) Note that one frosting recipe will be enough to frost a two-tier, 9-inch, naked layer cake. If you want to coat the outside of the cake as well, double the frosting recipe.
How to store it:
Use the frosting immediately after making it or keep it in the fridge for up to 1 day. Keep any frosted baked goods refrigerated.
Can I freeze baked goods frosted with mascarpone frosting?
Yes, I have tested freezing this mascarpone frosting on this chocolate Bourbon cake and it worked very well. Thaw the frozen cake on the kitchen counter for about 2 hours, then transfer to the fridge and keep refrigerated.
What else can I flavor mascarpone frosting with?
You can flavor mascarpone frosting with espresso. To do that, leave out the maple flavoring and instead add 1 ½ teaspoons instant espresso powder. All other ingredients and amounts remain the same.
