This Italian salad dressing has a delicious herb flavor and an ultra creamy texture from a mix of mayonnaise and buttermilk.

Italian salad dressing in a jar with a spoon.

Recipe ingredients and notes:

  • Many Italian dressing recipes call for a sweetener (usually sugar, honey or maple syrup) but this dressing is made without any added sugar.
  • The acidity in this dressing comes from a combination of buttermilk and red wine vinegar. The mellow tanginess of buttermilk and the sharpness of vinegar create a nicely balanced flavor so that no sweetener is needed to blunt the acidity.
Mayonnaise, buttermilk, garlic powder, salt, thyme, basil, marjoram, oregano and vinegar.

How to make it:

You don't need a food processor or blender for this dressing because you don't need to chop up any fresh herbs or create an emulsion. Instead, simply whisk all ingredients together in a bowl until smooth.

What to use it for:

This dressing is great on green salads, pasta salads or as a dipping sauce for anything from French fries to vegetables to pizza crust.
