Spiced Orange Cream Cheese Glaze

This orange cream cheese glaze has a delicious citrus flavor that's enhanced by cinnamon and cardamom. It's made with orange zest, freshly pressed juice, cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar and a secret ingredient: lemon juice. You only need a tiny bit but it makes all the difference. Without it, the glaze tastes nice but has a very weak finish. The lemon juice adds the punch that is needed to complete the flavor. Drizzle the glaze on cinnamon rolls for a stellar breakfast or brunch worthy of a special occasion!

Recipe ingredients:

Be sure to let the cream cheese and the butter come to room temperature before using them for this recipe. If they're too cold, you won't get a smooth mix.

Orange, lemon, butter, cream cheese, cinnamon, cardamom and powdered sugar.

Consistency of the glaze:

This glaze has a spreadable consistency. It's thinner than a frosting but not quite thin enough to be drizzled. I recommend applying it using the back of a spoon.

Spiced Orange Cream Cheese Glaze

This cinnamon cardamom glaze for cinnamon rolls has intense citrus flavor from fresh orange and lemon.

Equipment:

  • measuring cups and spoons
  • mixing bowl
  • citrus zester
  • citrus juicer
  • standing mixer OR handheld electric mixer

Ingredients:
  

  • 4 ounces full-fat block-style cream cheese (softened)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (softened)
  • ¾ teaspoon ground cardamom
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • ¾ teaspoon fresh orange zest
  • 3 tablespoons freshly pressed orange juice
  • ⅜ teaspoon lemon juice

Method:
 

  1. In a mixing bowl, whip together cream cheese and butter until smooth.
    4 ounces full-fat block-style cream cheese, 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  2. Whip in cardamom, cinnamon and powdered sugar.
    ¾ teaspoon ground cardamom, ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon, ½ cup powdered sugar
  3. Whip in orange zest, orange juice and lemon juice.
    ¾ teaspoon fresh orange zest, 3 tablespoons freshly pressed orange juice, ⅜ teaspoon lemon juice

Recipe notes:

How to use it: Spread the glaze over cinnamon rolls using the back of a spoon.
Storage: If you're not using the glaze immediately you can store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. The glaze will keep its spreadable consistency and will not firm up.
