Chipotle Lime Seasoning

This spicy chipotle lime seasoning combines the bright citrus flavor of dried lime zest with the smokiness of chipotle powder. Onion powder adds savory umami and salt rounds out the flavors. The seasoning is delicious on grilled or fried shrimp!

Seasoning ingredients and notes:

You need chipotle powder, onion powder, salt and the zest of 3 medium-sized limes for this recipe.

Three limes and a citrus zester.
  1. Zest limes.

  1. Let the zest dry at room temperature (about 1 day).

  1. Add all seasoning ingredients to a mortar.

  1. Grind with a pestle.

How to use it:

Shrimp and seasoning being tossed in a bowl.
  1. Pat shrimp dry using paper towels. Toss with vegetable oil and the seasoning.

  1. Grill or fry the shrimp.
  • Serve the shrimp by themselves as an appetizer or with rice and this creamy paprika sauce for an incredible meal.
  • The grilled shrimp are also delicious in shrimp tacos. I recommend to top them with this chipotle honey mayo!

Chipotle Lime Seasoning

Makes about 1 tablespoon of seasoning. I recommend to use about 1 tablespoon per 1 pound of shrimp.

Ingredients:
  

  • 3 medium-sized fresh limes
  • 1 teaspoon chipotle powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Equipment:

  • wax paper or parchment paper
  • citrus zester
  • paper towel
  • measuring spoons
  • mortar and pestle

Method:
 

  1. Thoroughly wash and dry, then zest the limes. Sprinkle the zest onto wax paper or parchment paper.
  2. Cover the zest loosely with a paper towel. Let sit at room temperature until completely dry (about 1 day).
  3. Add dried lime zest along with all remaining ingredients to a mortar and grind with a pestle.

Storage instructions: If you're not using the seasoning right away, store it in an airtight container in a cool, dark, dry place.
