DMBLGiT Contest – Call for Entries!!

DMBLGiT – Call for Entries!

Hello hello my blogging friends! I have exciting news: the incredibly popular food photography contest DMBLGiT (Does My Blog Look Good in This?) will be hosted right here on The Spice Train this month! 

The team is ready for your submissions and can’t wait to see all the gorgeous food photographs you have!

DMBLGiT June 2015DMBLGiT is a community-run food photography contest that was established ten years ago by Andrew Barrow of the delicious blog SpittoonExtra. This year Neel and his team over at learnfoodphotgraphy.com (awesome site!) have taken over the contest and are running it in conjunction with individual food bloggers who host the event on their blogs. This month’s contest is judged by three outstanding food photographers whose work I love and I am excited to introduce them to you:

Amanda Michetti is the recipe developer and food photographer behind the beautiful blog chewtown.com in Sydney. Amanda’s food photographs never fail to transport me to the scene and I love that about her work. One of my favorite Chew Town posts is How to Make Tomato Passata (The Italian Family Method), a really inspiring journalistic piece that documents Amanda’s family’s annual sauce-making tradition. Be sure to check it out!

Evi Abeler is a New York-based professional food and still life photographer who takes the photos you see on the mouthwatering blog whipandclick.com. Evi is a very talented storyteller who can turn even the most minimalistic scene into a compelling photograph. Give her some glassware and a pint of buttermilk and she turns them into a work of art. John Bek runs the gorgeous Sydney food blog heneedsfood.com. John is very talented at  creating mood and atmosphere in his photos and that’s what first drew me to his blog a few years ago. Even though I live thousands of miles away I love to read his local restaurant reviews just to experience the feeling he captures. One of my favorites is his recent post about the Turkish restaurant Pasha’s, check out the beautiful photography!

 

Now, here’s how the contest works:

Judging Criteria:

All photographs are reviewed by the panel of judges, who score them in three categories:
1) Edibility
2) Aesthetics
3) Originality

The judging process is anonymous, the judges hand the scores over to me and from the scores I determine the winners.

The specific things the judges will be looking for are:
– Edibility: Does the photo make us want to dig in and eat the food?
– Aesthetics: composition, food styling, lighting, focus of the photo
– Originality: Does the photograph catch our attention and make us say “wow!” by displaying something we might not have seen before.

There will be one winner in each of the three categories and a first, second and third place overall winner (based on the highest point totals in all three categories combined).

 

How to participate:

To participate simply email us the best photograph you took in May following the submission instructions below.

Send your photo as an attachment to dmblgit@learnfoodphotography.com AND to nicole@thespicetrain.com with the subject line “Submission for DMBLGiT June 2015″. You’ll receive an email confirmation within a few days of your submission. If you don’t receive a confirmation email, please contact me at nicole@thespicetrain.com.

Please include the following information in your photo submission:
1) Your full name
2) Your blog name and URL
3) Title of your photograph
4) URL to the blog post where the submitted photo is posted
5) Agreement from you to let us display your photo on thespicetrain.com, learnfoodphotography.com, and the DMBLGiT contest gallery. We won’t use your photo for any other purpose outside DMBLGiT.

General DMBLGiT Contest Rules:

– The file needs to be a jpeg and the longest size should be no longer than 500 pixels.
– The photo must not have any text.
– Only one entry per person. One photograph, no diptychs.
– The photo must have been taken and posted during the month of May 2015.
– This goes without saying but I will say it anyway – you must have taken the photograph yourself and must own the copyright to the photo.
– Entries must be received by June 20th at midnight Mountain time.

Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year Awards!

I’m very excited and honored to have won first place in the Food Portraiture category of this year’s Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year Awards!

Winning and finalist images are exhibited in London’s Mall Galleries until April 27, so if you happen to find yourself in the city of fog in the next few days (and are interested in food photography) you can check it out, the selection looks amazing!
